Cocoa & Forests Initiative (CFI)

Barry Callebaut Progress Reports
Formed in 2017, the Governments of Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana and the world's leading cocoa and chocolate companies, representing 85% of global cocoa usage, joined together to end deforestation and restore forest areas in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. Barry Callebaut was one of the leading signatories to drive the Cocoa & Forests Initiative (CFI) Frameworks for Action, which define the core commitments, verifiable actions, and time-bound targets required for a deforestation-free and forest-positive cocoa supply chain.

Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana respectively lost 25% and 8% of primary forest between 2002-20191. With a significant portion of deforestation attributable to cocoa farming expansion, collective action to end cocoa-related deforestation was needed. This is why, at the 2017 UN Climate Change Conference (COP 23), the governments of Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana together with leading chocolate and cocoa companies signed the Cocoa & Forests Initiative (CFI) Frameworks for Action, defining the core commitments and time-bound targets required for a deforestation-free and forest-positive cocoa supply chain.

Our key achievements in 2021

Key commitments of the Cocoa & Forests Initiative activities take action from three priorities:

  1. Forest protection and restoration
  2. Sustainable production and farmer livelihoods
  3. Community engagement and social inclusion

CFI is also critical to achieving our Forever Chocolate commitment to become forest positive by 2025. We believe that CFI is a best practice example approach that harnesses the combined resources and efforts of all stakeholders - governments, industry, and societal organizations to coordinate priorities, ensuring optimal use of resources and ultimately, creating impact.

We will continue to work with the governments of Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, our partners and other stakeholders to protect and restore forests, support sustainable cocoa production and thriving communities, and build a forest positive future.
