The sweet spots of sustainable sourcing

The sweet spots of sustainable sourcing

Story
By 2025, Barry Callebaut will have 100% sustainable ingredients in all of its products. This year, we have made great progress with 44% of what we source being sustainable. This achievement demonstrates the power of working and collaborating with customers, NGOs and government.

Sustainable ingredients means that our chocolate can continue to be enjoyed by future generations, forever. This means that it is produced while ensuring regard for a biodiverse environment as well as the farming communities and the suppliers we work with.

Sustainable sourcing - expectations of ourselves and others

In 2017/18 we updated our supplier code, which details our expectations towards suppliers with regards to compliance with laws and regulations, human rights and environmental impact. Our supplier code now contains requirements that we expect all our suppliers to comply with, as well as guidance for continuous improvement.  We also work with customers to support them in having equivalent discussions with their suppliers.

Building on our sourcing partnerships

sustainable ingredients - palm oil

Here are some examples of how we are driving sustainable production for all chocolate ingredients:

In addition to our membership of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), we became an active member of the Palm Oil Innovation Group (POIG). POIG has introduced additional sustainability criteria on palm oil production. These criteria include no development of palm oil plantations in High Conservation Stock (HCS) areas or peat land and strict criteria to safeguard against gross labor and human rights violations. We have started to assess our palm oil suppliers against the stricter standards of the POIG.

For soy we joined the Cerrado Manifesto to prevent the further development of soy farms in important grasslands in Brazil.

For sugar beet, we partnered with the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform (SAI) to implement sustainable sugar beet production in Russia. To that effect Barry Callebaut hosted a workshop in Moscow in September 2018, to bring together other sugar beet buyers in Russia such as Unilever, PepsiCo, Mars and others along with major suppliers. The group members committed to working closely with Russian sugar beet farmers to help them improve the sustainability of their farming.

To drive sustainable hazelnut farming in Turkey, we partnered with UTZ to improve labor conditions and farm productivity.

This year we sourced 44% of our non-cocoa agricultural raw materials sustainably. But what kind of raw materials does this include? Where are these located? More information about our fully sustainable ingredient range can be found via our interactive map.

Forever Chocolate is Barry Callebaut's plan to make sustainable chocolate the norm by 2025 to help ensure future supplies of cocoa and improve farmer livelihoods. It supports the Cocoa Horizons Foundation in its goal to shape a sustainable cocoa and chocolate future.
