Palm oil

Barry Callebaut has been a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) since 2011 to support RSPO’s vision to transform markets to make sustainable palm oil the norm.

RSPO has a four-part mission:

  • Advance the production, procurement, finance and use of sustainable palm oil products
  • Develop, implement, verify, assure and periodically review credible global standards for the entire supply chain of sustainable palm oil
  • Monitor and evaluate the economic, environmental and social impacts of the uptake of sustainable palm oil in the market
  • Engage and commit all stakeholders throughout the supply chain, including governments and consumers

While RSPO has brought the sustainable palm oil market far forward, there are still elements that we hope to build upon, such as traceability to plantation level, protection of High Carbon Stock (HSC) forests and High Conservation Value (HCV) areas, protection of peatland regardless of its depth, and additional support to smallholder farmers.

Barry Callebaut also participates in the Coalition for Sustainable Livelihoods. This consortium works to create a model of sustainable land use to foster improved livelihoods through policy, investment, and private sector engagement in North Sumatra and Aceh, Indonesia.

Barry Callebaut adopted a multi-faceted strategy towards sourcing sustainable palm oil. This involves:

  • A new approach to traceability and risk management with which we measure our supplier performance on No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation (NDPE) commitments. We especially target mills deemed as high risk for deforestation
  • Monitor deforestation and grievances in near real-time from concession to refinery with the Palmoil.io platform
  • Progress towards 100% RSPO certification coverage of our volumes
  • Participation in Landscape Programs to address systemic challenges in the palm oil sector that will become models for production regions to improve forest and biodiversity conservation, commodity production, and livelihood improvement
  • Support for smallholder improvement programs to improve livelihoods and forest conservation
