Sugarcane is a water-intensive crop that remains in the soil all year long. As one of the world’s thirstiest crops, sugarcane has a significant impact on many environmentally sensitive regions and on farmers harvesting under harsh conditions. The Bonsucro certification is providing solutions to sugarcane challenges, such as:
- Minimizing effluents and waste from sugar cane fields and from mills; protecting ground- and surface water and ecological areas from pollution.
- Reducing air pollution from field burning.
- Providing training for smallholder farmers on good agricultural and harvest practices to improve yields and livelihoods.
- Protecting biodiversity and preserving natural resources through appropriate land use planning.
Approximately 27% of the world's sugarcane land is engaged in Bonsucro, a global multi-stakeholder non-profit organization that promotes sustainable sugarcane production, processing and trade around the world.
