Organic certification

Organic is no longer a nice-to-have, it’s an expectation for the younger generations of consumers. La Morella Nuts believes in responsible food practices and clean ingredients, which is why we offer a range of organic almonds, hazelnuts and pistachios products. These nuts have been grown under the Mediterranean sun, without the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers.

There are various challenges in the hazelnuts production such as the low productivity, small farms, lack of mechanization, social issues and risk of child labour during the harvest in Turkey, as well as lack of attention to the environment and the preservation of biodiversity. 

The program UTZ is supporting farmers to improve their practices and become more sustainable by training them to good agricultural practices, environmentally-friendly measures, and better labour conditions for the migrant workers. The risk of child labour is especially seriously tackled by the implementation of Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation Systems in order to identify the existing risks and ensure for any case, an action plan is implemented.

 

Buying UTZ certified hazelnuts is the best way to support this journey and have a positive impact in the hazelnuts supply chain

The UTZ logo can be used on your packaging and you can use the testimonials and results of the UTZ program as storytelling to consumers.

Bee Friendly certified almonds

Modern farming has negative impacts on the environment and especially on biodiversity and pollinators due to the use of pesticides or the homogenization of landscape, among other factors… To produce almonds, honeybees and other pollinators play a key role, foraging from almond flowers and spreading pollen to ensure flowers can develop into almonds. Therefore ensuring that farming practices preserve pollinators is key for the future of almond production, but also for our overall food safety . 

Bee Friendly has been created by European beekeepers in this attempt. The association supports farmers to implement farming practices that are more favorable to the local biodiversity and especially protect bees and other pollinators. Farmers who respect the certification’s specifications and show continuous improvement year after year can be Bee Friendly certified.

 

We are very proud to be the first company partnering with Bee Friendly to implement their specifications in Spanish almond orchards and do our share to protect bees.

Sustainability for other ingredients

As part of Barry Callebaut, we are aligned with the Forever Chocolate ambition and work towards the target of having 100% of our ingredients verified sustainable by 2025.

Today, 32% of our ingredients are verified sustainable in La Morella Nuts. 

Beyond our focus on sustainable nuts, we also ensure all our other ingredients are verified sustainable.  

  • Cocoa can be UTZ, Fairtrade, Cocoa Horizons. More information here
  • Beet sugar is verified sustainable with the FSA tool (or equivalent). More information here. 
  • Cane sugar can be certified Fairtrade
  • Palm oil is RSPO certified.

Crunchy mix of small Spanish organic hazelnut pieces and organic caramelized sugar for the perfect balance of sweet and crunchy. Medium roasting brings out a delicately toasted, fresh hazelnut taste. In some markets, crocants are better known as ‘bresilienne’, 'pralin' or "praliné pieces". For this product, we only use premium quality Spanish organic hazelnuts.
