At Barry Callebaut, we do our best to avoid damage to the environment. As an integrated chocolate company with suppliers, operations, and customers around the globe, we are very conscious of the environmental impacts of our value chain
We focus our greatest efforts on reducing energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions in production and transportation. Energy-saving activities include energy monitoring software, process optimization (stopping wastage, reducing leaks, improving output), technological innovation (new conching technology, free-cooling), training and awareness. In 2013/14 we reached our 5-year target to reduce energy per tonne of activity by 20%.The new 5-year target is to reduce our carbon footprint by a further 20% by 2018/19.
Reducing our carbon footprint requires a dual approach. First, we aim to reduce the use of energy. Second, we are switching from fossil fuels to renewable energies, such as biomass from empty cocoa shells. In 2013/14 we reached our 5-year target to reduce carbon emissions per tonne of activity by 20%. The new 5-year target is to reduce our carbon footprint by a further 20% by 2018/19.
Water used in our operations is taken mainly from municipal sources. We have started to implement programs to reduce water use. In 2013/14 the water use per tonne of activity decreased by 4% vs previous year. The new 5-year target is to reduce our carbon footprint by a further 20% by 2018/19.
Waste reduction has been integrated into the continuous improvement program One+, focusing on our main waste streams, where the biggest improvements can be realized.
