Converting to sustainable
cane sugar

Barry Callebaut joined Bonsucro’s sustainable sugarcane initiative in 2017 to address the myriad issues impacting sugarcane farmers and provide a sustainable supply of cane sugar for our chocolate creations.

Sugarcane is a water-intensive crop that remains in the soil all year long. As one of the world’s thirstiest crops, sugarcane has a significant impact on many environmentally sensitive regions and on farmers harvesting under harsh conditions. The Bonsucro certification is providing solutions to sugarcane challenges, such as:

  • Minimizing effluents and waste from sugar cane fields and from mills; protecting ground- and surface water and ecological areas from pollution.
  • Reducing air pollution from field burning.
  • Providing training for smallholder farmers on good agricultural and harvest practices to improve yields and livelihoods.
  • Protecting biodiversity and preserving natural resources through appropriate land use planning.

Approximately 27% of the world's sugarcane land is engaged in Bonsucro, a global multi-stakeholder non-profit organization that promotes sustainable sugarcane production, processing and trade around the world.
