Hazelnut (Spain)
About hazelnut in Spain
Topographically Tarragona's orchards can be classified into two groups:
- The inland ones, in the mountains of Priorat, produce 20% of the spanish production. They are located on hilly slopes, with a low mechanisation level, dry farming (around 400 mm of annual rainfall), low yields (500-800 kg/ha) and tending to decrease over the years.
- The flat area orchards of Camp de Tarragona generate the main commercial hazelnut production i (>50%). They are located near the Mediterranean coast and are highly mechanised, with high production (2 000-2 500 kg/HA with shell) and larger orchards : between 5 and 10 hectares and modern cultivation techniques.
Some large orchards can also be found around Girona, in north Catalonia.
The rest of the Spanish production, 10%, is to be found in Asturias.
