Growing impact, driving change - the latest achievements of the Cocoa Horizons program

Story
Back in September 2015, Barry Callebaut created the Cocoa Horizons Foundation to help shape a sustainable future for cocoa and chocolate. The independent, non profit organization aims to improve the livelihoods of cocoa farmers and their communities through the promotion of sustainable, entrepreneurial farming, improved productivity and community development. The foundation recently published its year-end report highlighting the Cocoa Horizons program achievements from the 2015/16 fiscal year.
  • Did you know that the number of Cocoa Horizons farmers has increased from 25,000 to 35,720 in the past year? And that each one of these farmers received a cash premium on top of the cocoa market price?

  • Did you know that 4,350 farmers were enabled to open a savings account, which is the first step toward accessing the productivity package?

  • Did you know that more than 400,000 seedlings were distributed to replace aged and unproductive cocoa trees on-farm?

  • Did you know that a child labor monitoring and remediation system was implemented together with the International Cocoa Initiative, already reaching approximately 4,000 farmers and their families?

The cocoa snapshot

These and other achievements were made possible by the sale of Barry Callebaut’s HORIZONS cocoa and chocolate products, Foundation donors, and Barry Callebaut contributions of yearly CHF 4 million.  More details on the various accomplishments from last year can be found in the Cocoa Snapshot (see below), a biannual report. The newly released 15/16 Year-end Review is also posted on the Cocoa Horizons website.

HORIZONS’ customers can also find the full 2015/16 Assurance Report via their login on the Foundation’s website. Verified by PwC, this report showcases Cocoa Horizons’ ongoing activities to scale impact and drive change in cocoa growing communities.

The Cocoa Horizons objectives are aligned with Barry Callebaut’s sustainability strategy, Forever Chocolate, to make sustainable chocolate the norm by 2025. Contact us to find out more.
