Exciting new research points to the potentially life-prolonging effects of Barry Callebaut’s ACTICOA™ chocolate: chocolate that makes you live longer

Scientific research into the nutritional benefits of cocoa continues to unlock the secrets of this remarkable fruit. The positive effects of cocoa polyphenols on health and well-being have been known for some time now and the list of proven properties of these powerful antioxidants continues to grow. A recent study conducted by the independent ETAP Research Center in France is breaking entirely new ground in establishing links between the consumption of polyphenols and longevity. Its findings point to the possibility that cocoa polyphenols not only improve the quality of life, especially when getting older, but may well play a part in prolonging it as well. The study concluded that the lifespan of rats consuming Barry Callebaut’s ACTICOA™ cocoa polyphenol powder was 30% longer than that of rats subjected to the same stress levels without being given cocoa polyphenols.

The ordinary Annual General Meeting of Barry Callebaut AG, the world’s leading manufacturer of cocoa and chocolate products, was held on Thursday, December 7, 2006, in Zurich under the chairmanship of Andreas Jacobs, Chairman of the Board. All motions proposed by the Board were adopted.

Laying of foundation stone for factory in China: Barry Callebaut is building a new CHF 20 million chocolate factory near Shanghai

After being granted a business license and opening a sales office in Shanghai, China, in October 2006, Barry Callebaut today laid the foundation stone for a new state-of-the-art chocolate factory in Suzhou, China. Suzhou is located in the Greater Shanghai area and offers an excellent infrastructure in a new industrial park. Construction and start-up time for the new factory will take between 12 and 18 months. The total investment is about CHF 20 million (EUR 12.7 million). The new factory will have a capacity of 25,000 tonnes and offer about 100 new jobs once it is running at full capacity.

Barry Callebaut appoints Olaf Blank as Vice President Consumer Products Europe

Barry Callebaut AG, the world’s leading manufacturer of cocoa and chocolate products, has appointed Olaf Blank (born 1951) as Vice President Consumer Products Europe, effective December 1, 2006. In this function, he will also be Managing Director of Barry Callebaut’s German consumer products subsidiary, Stollwerck GmbH, reporting to Onno Bleeker. Onno Bleeker, who was appointed President Europe as of September 2006, will now focus entirely on managing the Group’s activities in Western and Eastern Europe.
