We are committed to continuous improvement – At Barry Callebaut, we take all necessary precautions to avoid damage to the environment. We have extended our conservation programs to cocoa producing countries where we do the first conversion processing of cocoa beans to cocoa liquor. Our key strategic priorities are to conserve resources, to minimize adverse impacts, to eliminate surplus packaging, and to maximize waste recovery and recycling.

Reducing energy consumption
We aim to reduce our overall energy consumption by 20% per metric ton of production output in 5 years through the installation of more energy-efficient equipment in our plants for semi-finished products, improved plant efficiency and an improved logistics.

Participating in Carbon Disclosure Project
Barry Callebaut participates in the Carbon Disclosure project to measure emissions using the Greenhouse Gas Protocol methodology.

Increasing production in origin countries
We have increased production of cocoa liquor in origin countries, resulting in an 18-20% reduction in transport weight (cocoa beans compared to liquor).

Burning cocoa shells for energy-savings
Cocoa shell burning at our factories in Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Brazil has reduced the gas or fuel consumption at those sites from 60 to 100%.

Implementing a Global Environmental Policy
Barry Callebaut launched a Global Environmental Policy for our factories in 2008. We focus our efforts on 5 areas that have a major impact on the environment and that are important in our business: emissions, water consumption, energy consumption, waste and transport.

Our main objectives are to monitor and continuously improve the performance in every plant, to create awareness and promote the active involvement and accountability of employees in the environmental footprint, and to comply with all relevant laws, rules and regulations in the countries where we operate.

We plan to extend the monitoring and evaluation of emissions, water consumption and energy consumption beyond our factories to include also our sales offices and transport systems.
