Ensuring a thriving cocoa sector
Cocoa is a fragile and sensitive crop. It is grown in a narrow geographical band near the Equator by mainly smallholder farmers and their families in some of the poorest areas of the world. In order to meet future demand for chocolate, we must contribute to ensuring that cocoa is grown in a sustainable way that generates income for farmers and safeguards the environment.

Corporate responsibility and sustainability - An overview of our activities 2008 - 2010
Operating in key cocoa growing regions
We are uniquely positioned to help drive sustainability initiatives that benefit farmers and their families and that protect the environment. We therefore invest in programs to empower cocoa farmers by providing improved access to agricultural training and other support services. We work to help ensure that children in cocoa farming communities are not harmed through unsafe or inappropriate work. In selecting our projects and activities, we take into account the 3 drivers economic growth, ecological balance and social progress.
Recognizing our responsibility
As the world’s leading cocoa and chocolate manufacturer, we regard food safety and quality as our highest priority. We aim to minimize the impact on the environment of our operations. Our business success depends on our 6,000 Barry Callebaut employees around the world, and we strive to engage and empower our employees by providing a safe, healthy and inspiring work environment.
